Lineup matters, but crowd, city, schedule and genre identity usually matter more.

The biggest mistake people make with festivals is picking only from the top line. Headliners matter, but they are not the whole weekend. The better question is what kind of weekend you actually want.

Start with the crowd

Every festival has a crowd personality. EDC feels different from Coachella. Shambhala feels different from Ultra. A city festival feels different from a camping festival. The lineup gets you interested, but the crowd shapes the memory.

Check the middle of the poster

If you only care about two headliners, the festival may not be worth the full trip. Look at the second and third lines. That is where you find out whether the booking really matches your taste.

For electronic fans, genre spread matters. A bass-heavy weekend, a house and techno weekend and a multi-genre festival are totally different experiences even if a few names overlap.

Understand the format

Camping festivals reward commitment. City festivals reward convenience. Destination festivals reward planning. One-day events reward focus. None is automatically better, but choosing the wrong format can ruin a strong lineup.

Budget beyond the ticket

Pick your non-negotiables, then let the weekend move. The best sets are often the ones you find by accident, especially at festivals with strong stage curation.
